The state budget for the upcoming year proposes MVR 796.74 million for scholarships in the education sector.
While the proposed state budget was presented to the parliament floor at Monday’s sitting, hefty amounts, unlike previous years, have been allocated for several sectors, including the education sector.
The budget has allocated MVR 4,412 million for the education sector, the biggest budget for the sector under the state budget thus far.
Recurrent expenditure was allocated at MVR 3,794 million and MVR 617 million as capital expenditure, revealed Ministry of Finance, Ibrahim Ameer.
21 percent of this budget is allocated for scholarships and education which is MVR 796.74, 56 percent for employees in the sector which is MVR 2,124.64 million and 23 percent for recurrent expenditure which is MVR 872.62 million.
Further, MVR 300 million has been allocated for establishing educational infrastructure in atolls, MVR 35 million to establish a medical school, MVR 65 million to develop Dharumavantha School building, MVR 27 million to establish State of the Art TVET Institution in capital city Malé and southern Fuvahmulah City, MVR 54 million for the new school in Malé’s suburban extension Hulhumalé and MVR 22 million for the construction of classrooms in eight floors of the Center for Higher Secondary Education (CHSE).
