Malé City Council has given local street food vendors doing business in the West Park region in Maafannu-ward of the city, a notice to evict the region.

While the vendors are required to vacate the region by Wednesday, the council revealed the decision to link the region to Maafannu Artificial Beach, more commonly known as Rasfannu.

The council is to have reportedly asked street food vendors in the region to vacate the region previously as well.

This comes at a time the Health Protection Agency (HPA) had claimed that the region is unhygienic and doesn’t match up to safety standards for food businesses, after a survey carried out in August.

The food carts are currently operating under a temporary authorization from the council and without a legal agreement.

If the vendors do not follow through, the council will begin a cleanup of the region under the waste management protocol.

While there aren’t many street food vendors in the capital, local food carts or “Gaadiyaa” sell some of the best local delicacies and are popular spots among Maldivians.
