The challenges facing development and progress for Gaaf Alif atoll have been discussed with President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
During a meeting that took place at the President’s Office on Monday afternoon, councilors from Gaaf Alif Atoll Council shared pressing issues and obstacles surfacing the island community in multiple spheres.
Highlighting the manifold challenges, they face in catering for the needs of their constituents, councilors stressed that ferry services in the atoll require to be upgrades as well as the health services offered.
Other concerns include difficulties faced due to lack of policing, complications in performing council duties owing to the lack of space in the Council Secretariat.
Councilors went on to share requirements presented by different island communities including the need for employment opportunities within the tourism sector, introduction of island tourism as well as development within the fisher community to ensure their catch receives deserving value.
Ways to ensure mechanisms are maintained to prevent waste dumping in atoll channels were also shared with the President.
Further, the president and councilors discussed road development, housing and harbor development projects in several islands.
Quality of utility services like electricity, waste management and water and sanitation services were also discussed.
Taking note of all the topics covered during the meeting, Solih assured the councilors that work is currently underway to decentralize the government and shared the new framework which will pave way for councilors the resources and discretion to develop their atolls in a way that benefits their constituents.
