Chemical warehouse fire: nine buildings demolished, six in unlivable condition

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) revealed that nine buildings have been demolished and six are in unlivable condition following the chemical warehouse fire that broke out on 20 September.

The authority revealed lasted updates about the buildings in Abadhah Fehi Magu in Henveiru-ward of capital city Malé on Tuesday, where the fire broke out inside a chemical warehouse located in H. Thilafushi.

Six warehouses were demolished after a risk assessment was carried out; Thilafushi, Martin, Almeen, Kalhuhuraa’aage and Al’Huraa and three houses, Kiev, Neighbor and Nigaaran all in the same road.

The houses that have been damaged beyond repair are, Evaau, Radhuvaaniyage, Eeraanuge, Kalhuhuraa Garden, Kalhuhuraa and Alfa.

Further, NDMA revealed that five houses are safe to live in, however, they require reconstruction; Adhoo, Nishan Plaza, Keel, Emotion and Gasva.

NDMA went on to reveal that families from 11 houses have been moved back and authorized to reside in their homes; Rasmaa, Rasmaadhooge, Gadhage, Gadhage Hulhangubai, Holhikosheege, Holhikosheege’aage, Fehiaabaadhu, Gazvin café, Kinolhas, Sofa and Geema.

Thus far, six families have been moved back to their houses after a risk assessment was carried out.

The chemical warehouse fire on 20 September took down four warehouses and six houses in its wake. A total of 786 had sought temporary aid out of which 450 are men and 336 are women.

Out of the total amount, 636 are Maldivians and 104 Bangladeshi nationals, 19 Indians, 16 Nepalis, 14 Sri Lankan nationals, six Philippine nationals and one Egyptian.

The incident was the biggest such incident in recent history and the government has assured the public that necessary action will be taken to prevent such incidents from repeating.
