Lawyer Maumoon Hameed to run for Presidency at the Bar Council
 
EC publicized the voters’ registry for the election, scheduled for 13 July, on Tuesday
 
Those running for the position of President or Vice President need to have 10 years of experience as a lawyer
 
Former Attorney General Husnu Suood also expressed interest to run for the post

Prominent lawyer Maumoon Hameed has confirmed that he will be running for the post of President at the Bar Council.

This was revealed through a tweet on Tuesday where the lawyer stated that he will be submitting his application to contest in the elections, scheduled for 13 July.

Hameed went on to wish everyone contesting in the election the best of luck.

Former Attorney General Husnu Suood also expressed interest to run for presidency at the Bar Council.

Recently ratified Legal Profession Act states that the Executive Committee of the Bar Council shall consist of the President, Vice President, and six members.

Article 11(b) of the Act states that the President, Vice President, and attorneys of the Bar Council’s Executive Committee should be chosen through an election organized by the Elections Commission of the Maldives. It also states that the election should be held within 21 days of ratification.

Further, those running for the position of President or Vice President need to have 10 years of experience as a lawyer and those running for a member seat need five years of experience.

Also on Tuesday, EC publicized the voters’ registry for the election which will see ballot boxes stationed in all islands.

Only those with the license to practice law will be able to vote in the election and the deadline to apply for the Bar Council election is set at 5am, Friday.
