Fathimath Zaina has been appointed as the vice president of the Maldives Broadcasting Commission (Broadcom).
She was appointed to the post at a meeting held on Monday, following Ismail Sofwan’s resignation.
Sofwan is to have resigned from the Commission on June 13.
Prior to the resignation, Sofwan was receiving full salary despite not having shown up for work for over six months.
Zaina was appointed to the broadcasting commission by former President Abdulla Yameen, on 5th April 2016.
Earlier on Monday, parliament’s committee on independent institutions passed to summon the Broadcom members for questioning.
While they are to be presented next week, the members are to be questioned over their actions in the past five years, including the obstruction of media freedom. Sofwan’s salary issue is on the agenda as well.
The current administration has faced backlash for failing to take action against Broadcom members, despite their work to restrict media freedom during the previous administration.
