Gahdhoo island council president blames the power outages on the "old" generators

Residents of Gahdhoo island of Gaadu Dhaalu atoll had to break the first fast of Ramadan in the dark, following a power cut in the entire island.

The island council’s president Rayyan Jamaal told RaajjeMV that there was a power cut at dusk, as well as earlier in the day.

Rayyan said that the reason for the power cuts is because “the three generators on the island are old.” He added that the generators are not able to provide electricity to the entire island.

Furthermore, Rayyan noted that a number of households are installing air conditioners due to the current hot weather, and highlighted that this will also affect the generators.

While the council has shared the issue with the Fenaka Corporation managing director Ahmed Saeed, they have been told that the issue with the generators will be examined within the next few days, and that they will work to provide a solution at the earliest.

Rayyan also said that Saeed had vowed to fix the issue, “even if it means providing a new generator” to the island.

With there are around 3,100 people registered to Gahdhoo island, 1,600 people reside there.
