As part of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s first-100-day agenda, the Civil Service Commission of the Maldives has appointed sports councilors.
At a ceremony held at Champa Central Hotel on Wednesday, 88 individuals were appointed to the position and handed their letters of appointment.
In early February, President Solih had announced that 200 new positions for sports councilors were established by the Civil Service Commission. He made the announcement during his presidential address at the People’s Majlis’ inaugural sitting on 7 February.
President Solih had stated that the government wishes to encourage an active and healthy lifestyle, going on to emphasize the importance of the next generation of Maldivians being healthy.
These sports councilors will be tasked with organizing and managing different sports and recreation activities across the nation.
During the ceremony on Wednesday, acting Minister of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment, Ali Waheed had appealed on the appointed sports councilors to refrain from getting involved in political activities, rather to work towards achieving the historic Maldives spirit for sports and recreational activities.
Stressing the poor state of sports in the country, Minister Waheed stated that sports associations are also experiencing collapses. In order to reform the sector, Minister Waheed asked for the community’s held in developing recreational facilities provided by the previous administration.
