Trial of six charged over Jian's death to begin on Thursday
 
Charged are four Indian nationals and two Maldivians
 
Four expatriate workers and two senior company officials were charged in late February

Criminal Court has scheduled the trials of six individuals charged over the death of Rawshan Jian, to begin on Thursday.

The trial is scheduled to begin at 10am on Thursday.

Eight-year-old Bangladeshi girl, Jian succumbed to injuries attained from being crushed by a falling cement bag from a construction site under the maintenance of W Construction, last December.

Maldives Police Service had concluded their investigation into the case and forwarded the case to the Prosecutor General’s office in February and the charges were raised against the six from W Construction in late February.

PG office pressed charges against Indian National Rajjav Ali for criminal negligence in operating the winch lift that had caused the cement bag to tear and fall. If found guilty, Ali faces a prison sentence totaling six years.

Muthumani Ramachandhuran is charged over the same offence, Keshariral Chauhan and Gulan Mahamadhu are charged with failure to warn a person of a hazard. They face a one-month and six-day sentence if found guilty.

In addition to the Indian nationals, W Construction’s senior site supervisor Moosa Hassan and managing director Adam Shafeeq are charged with criminal negligence for failure to secure their site as senior officials of the company.

If the charges against them are proven, they face a prison sentence of one year, seven months and six days.
