There is no legal reason to delay the Parliamentary Election, says Elections Commission Chief Ahmed Shareef.
In a tweet on Saturday, Shareef said there is no legal obstacle to holding the election on the scheduled date.
The commission revealed that they will be holding discussions regarding a formal letter addressed to it by the opposition Progressive Congress, requesting a postponement of the election date. However, they do not have the intent to delay it.
The opposition coalition of former President Abdulla Yameen's Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM) and People’s National Congress (PNC) is seeking to delay the election citing that they believe the current environment of the country does not pave way for a safe election to be held.
Describing their leader and the former President as one of the most supported leaders in the country, PNC President Abdul Raheem Abdulla said that him being behind bars has weakened the campaign of opposition candidates running in the parliamentary election.
The Parliamentary Election is to be held on April 6, and both the ruling and opposition coalitions have announced that they will be fielding candidates.
