Hearings in the case filed at the High Court by former President Abdulla Yameen, seeking to overturn three Criminal Court order to freeze two bank accounts linked to him, have concluded.
The first preliminary hearing was held at the Hight Court behind closed doors on Thursday. The court revealed following the hearing that it was the first and last hearing in the case.
Next is will be the verdict hearing.
While the Criminal Court issued the first order to freeze the two accounts on the 14th of December, Police had earlier announced that they had found hefty amounts of cash to have been deposited at the two accounts, in Bank of Maldives and Islamic Bank during the past five years. Police also found that illicit transactions had also been carried out through these accounts.
However, the former president’s attorneys assert that the Criminal Court orders were issued against the Criminal Procedure Act and gets in the way of basic rights guaranteed to him.
They accuse the ruling to be as one issued to influence the upcoming Parliamentary Election, scheduled for 6th April.
Police earlier revealed that over MVR 100 million had been deposited to said accounts.
