President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated that his government is investigating 11 amendments made by the previous administration, targeting certain individuals.

President Solih stated while delivering his first Presidential Address at Dharubaaruge on Thursday morning.

The new government had submitted 14 bills to parliament since November 17, out of which 10 have been passed and ratified.

Emphasizing that his government has begun work to amend the legal framework, President Solih stated that the most important ones for now have been forwarded to the parliament.

As such, President Solih stated that the bill regarding illicit wealth has been forwarded to parliament.

In addition, the government is preparing to forward a bill to parliament within its first session, regarding justice for children.

President Solih also stated that the government has attained opinions from the public and relevant authorities in order to amend the decentralization act.

Stating that he believes a democratic system begins with the people, President Solih stated that although the Maldives constitution and governance have been decentralized, the government still has the reins of the system.

President Solih also emphasized that the councils which had their powers stripped from them during the previous administration, have had their powers restored to them.

The president also revealed that a bill regarding civil justice in the Maldives is also to be forwarded to Parliament.

President Solih said that while we have a democratic governance, civil societies play an important role in stabilizing the social framework of the country. As such, a bill empowering such associations to be a part of the society will also be forwarded to parliament within its first session.
