The government has begun seeking aid from international community in the investigations to tackle the culture of corruption in the Maldives, says President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

President Solih stated this during his first Presidential Address delivered on Thursday morning.

The president revealed that his government has begun work to tackle corruption by investigating the many cases of corruption, including the massive case of graft involving Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC).

The cases are being investigated by the commission assembled by the president to attain the millions embezzled through state funds through corrupt practices.

Shedding light on the extent of corruption in the country when he assumed office in November 2018, President Solih stated that the committees have sought help from the international community in their investigations.

“There was not a single part of the state that had not been stained with corruption when I assumed office. There were no institutions that weren’t practicing corruption and deceit. The country did not drop to that level in the absence of laws and guidelines on avoiding corruption. The institutions tackling corruption were also running when these things happened” said President Solih.

President Solih went on to assure that his government will get back the millions embezzled through corruption and will be taking the lawfully mandated action against the offenders.

The president also stated that the commission investigating deaths and disappearances is also conducting investigations which are almost at an end now.
