Authorities have decided to implement the guideline to print health warning labels on tobacco products and ban the sale of individual cigarettes from 31st of March onward.

This was publicized on the government gazette on Thursday.

It also states that those who go against the guideline will be fined. Fines amount from MVR 5,000 to MVR 20,000.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih publicized the guideline at a ceremony held on Thursday.

Speaking at the event to publicize the guideline, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih stated that the Aasandha Company has to spend the most on diseases and ailments caused by the dangers of tobacco. President Solih stressed that this requires a deep thought.

Highlighting that we can no longer stand observing these issues without taking any action, and that it is about time we created more awareness on the dangers of tobacco.

While the guideline has been publicized on the government gazette on Thursday, President Solih said that the aim is to stop the sale of individual cigarettes and to spread awareness among the public.

Stressing that the current warning labels that have been seen on tobacco products since 2004 are not enough, President Solih said that they have been of no use as its usage has not reduced over the years.

Further, the President emphasized that the number of tobacco users are increasing in the country, adding that they spend between MVR 1,800 – 3,500 per month, which is a big amount compared to a small island state.

President Solih described this step as an important one to build generations of healthier, fitter Maldivians.

Initially passed by the Cabinet of Ministers on Tuesday, endorsing to print health warning labels on tobacco products is in keeping with the President’s pledge to create public awareness

Enhancing public awareness on health issues led by tobacco is one of President Solih’s key pledges to be implemented within his first 100 days in office.
