Coalition partner Maumoon Reform Movement (MRM) will work “tirelessly” towards strengthening the coalition government, says party leader and former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.
A tweet posted by the former President early on Thursday reads that MRM will continue to “fully support” President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to safeguard the rule of law and good governance in the country.
As one of the coalition partners, MRM will work tirelessly towards strengthening the 4-party coalition and continue to fully support President @ibusolih in safeguarding the rule of law and good governance in Maldives.

In mid-January, the coalition leader had also stated that upholding unity among the coalition is the primary duty of it’s four leaders; former President Mohamed Nasheed, Parliament Speaker Qasim Ibrahim, Home Minister Imran Abdulla and himself.
Gayoom’s tweet comes amid reports that the coalition could break, as one of the partners continue to accuse the other of violating agreement.
As such, MDP and JP have been seen in a clash for the past few days, with JP leader Qasim aiming heavy criticism at MDP leader Nasheed. He has made his discontent regarding MDP’s decision to compete for all 87 seats in the upcoming Parliamentary Election scheduled for April, very clear.
Despite the differences of opinion, former President Nasheed had during a talk-show live on RaajjeTV, assured the people that the coalition government will not fall apart.
While Qasim has stated that his party will only work with the coalition “if and when” agreements made between them are honoured, Nasheed stated that his party wholeheartedly believes in the agreement made with the coalition. However, he claims that they have not made any deals on how the parties should contest in the Parliamentary Election.
Amid the conflict within the ruling coalition, President Solih has announced that the coalition leaders are working to hold their monthly meeting in the coming week.
Despite the tension, Qasim on Wednesday met with lawmakers aligned with former President Abdulla Yameen. He had even stated his willingness to work with other political parties following which coalition leader Imran called on the leaders to maintain the coalition.
