President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated that his government will neither tolerate nor give way for religious unrest.

At a press conference held on Thursday at the President’s Office, President Solih stressed that recent days have seen the beginning of a debate in the name of Islam, highlighting that this has churned religious unrest among the people.

President Solih highlighted that the people are very clear of what religion they follow, adding that his government’s policies also follow Islamic ways. The government’s manifesto clears enlightens on the topic, he said.

He also stated that peace and harmony in the nation is important for its progress and development. He said that this is very clear from the outcome of the past Presidential Election, held last September as well as the tourist arrivals count as well as the perspective of the international community on Maldives.

The Maldives constitution clearly describes the religion Maldives follows, and his government will not give way for any individual to go against it or create unrest regarding religion among the people.

“We will not give way for religious extremism. This is what the people tasked us with. We will make sure it is carried out. We do not wish for anyone to disrupt the peace of the nation” said the President.

Stressing that religious extremism also disrupts the peace of the nation and creates unrest among the people, President Solih assured that his government will not pave way for such things.

The President also stated that authorities will not back down from enforcing laws in taking relevant measures if required.

“We have come into power to enforce the law. This is what we are tasked with. With the grace of god, we will carry out our duties” said President Solih.
