President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated that he believes the coalition leaders may hold their monthly meeting in the coming week.

The four coalition leaders made the decision to hold a monthly meeting on the 15th of November at Hotel Jen, after which they have not yet announced a date for their next meeting.

The last meeting between the coalition leaders was held on the 20th of December.

However, President Solih at a press conference on Thursday stated that the coalition leaders had held discussions earlier on Thursday, adding that the meeting may be held next week.

Noting that he is to depart to Laamu Gan this weekend to join a marathon, the president said that the meeting will take place after he returns, most likely during the middle of the week.

Although a date for the meeting has not yet been cleared, recent days have seen a difference of opinion that has led to a rift between the coalition parties, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Jumhooree Party (JP), Adhaalath Party (AP) and Maumoon Reform Movement (MRM).

As such, MDP and JP have been seen in a clash during the past few days, with JP leader Qasim Ibrahim aiming heavy criticism at MDP’s leader and former President Mohamed Nasheed, accusing him of casting JP aside. In addition, Qasim has also expressed his discontent regarding MDP’s decision to compete for all 86 seats in the upcoming Parliamentary Election scheduled for April.

During these times of dispute, Qasim had also on Wednesday met with members of former President Abdulla Yameen’s People’s National Congress (PNC).

The meeting comes at a time the business tycoon and current parliament speaker stated that his party is willing to form coalitions with other political parties. Following this, coalition leader Sheikh Imran Abdulla had also called on the leaders to maintain the coalition.
