Former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb has been transferred back to prison on Saturday.

Maldives Correctional Service officers had with the assistance of police officers, transferred the former VP back to prison on Saturday afternoon.

Maldives Third Way Democrats Deputy Leader Yameen Rasheed told the press outside Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) that authorities have transferred him to prison yet again, out of the legal ambit and against doctor’s recommendation.

While he has been taken back to prison, he was released to house arrest for 36 days due to a health deterioration in November. Under the doctor’s recommendation, Adeeb was transferred to house arrest on the 27th of November 2018 and corrections officers had taken him back to Maafushi Prison on the 02nd of January. During his time under house arrest, Adeeb carried out various political activities including forming a party; he was also appointed as the president of the party- Maldives Third-Way Democrats (MTD).

After a statement released by the Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) regarding his prison transfer, the MCS released a statement in response, stating that he was transferred for violating regulations.

As such, MCS revealed that Adeeb was transferred back to prison as the service had not observed a health deterioration that could not be treated in prison, during the time he was in house arrest, going on to assure that the service will not violate human rights when providing services for convicts.
