President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has on Thursday ratified six bills, some of which are included in his ambitious first '100-day agenda.'
Two out of the six bills are included among the President’s pledges for his first 100-days in office.
The amendments are to the Export Import Act.
The 15th amendment abolishes import dury on agricultural equipment and materials, while the 16th amendement waives import duty from diesel used in fishing vessels.
Parliament passed the bill proposed by Maradhoo MP Ibrahim Shareef to abolish import duty on agricultural items on December 11, with the votes of 56 MPs. The other, proposed by Thimarafushi MP Mohamed Musthafa, was passed on December 12 with the votes of 60 members.
Another bill ratified by the President proposes to bring the ninth amendment to the Maldives Tourism Act, and restores powers to the Environment Protection Agency (EPA).
President Solih also ratified an amendment to the Prisons and Parole Act of Maldives, the bill bringing the fourth amendment to the Maldives Companies Act as well as the bill bringing the first ever amendment to the Act on prioritizing the national language.
Whereas the Prisons and Parole Act previously stated that only an officer among the commissioned officers at the Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) may be appointed as Commissioner of Prisons by the President, following the ratification of the bill, the Commissioner of Prisons does not require to be a commissioned officer from MCS.
The bill proposing to transfer the responsibility of the academy for Dhivehi language, “Dhivehi Bahuge Academy” to the Ministry of Arts, Culture and Heritage was proposed by Hithadhoo Central constituency MP Ibrahim Mohamed Didi and was passed in Parliament with the votes of 46 members on December 10. The Ministry of Education currently takes on the responsibilities of the Academy which was formed back in 2011 during the administration of former President Mohamed Nasheed.
