The National Disaster Management Center (NDMC) has begun distributing funds to the families affected by the flooding in capital city Male’ cased by heavy rains on the 5th of December.
While 127 households were affected, the center has begun work to contact all the families and so far, they have given funds to 24 families thus far.
Project Director and Media Coordinator Hisaan Hassan revealed that while losses up to MVR 1.2 million was incurred due to the flooding, they had received over MVR 1.3 million as free aid from different parties.
Highlighting that the center will not delay the distribution of these funds, Hisaan stated that their objective it to distribute the funds as soon as possible so as to aid affected families return to their normal lifestyles.
“We’ve planned to distribute the funds after dividing the households into groups. We’ve called the owners of these households and asked for specific documents to be submitted. Once they’ve submitted the required documents, we’ll give them the money as aid” said Hisaan.
The households that were most affected due to the flooding were the ones near the Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital area, households westward of Ameenee Magu and the households near the West Park area.
Following the hours-long rain showers that caused 149 millimeters of floods, some up to knee level, the capital city had remained flooded throughout the entirety of 5th December, with the water having entered households as well. NDMC had provided temporary shelter to 20 people following the flood. The two families had been taken into their care and accommodated at a guest house. State utilities company, STELCO and Maldives Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) also provided furnishings and other household items as free aid.
