Elections Commission has given the newly formed two political parties approval to hold their inaugural gathering.

The commission gave the green light to hold their inaugural gatherings to Maldives Labor and Social Democratic Party (MLSDP) and Maldives Third way Democrats (MTD) on Wednesday.

A total of 3,000 memberships are required within three months to form a new political in the Maldives and the political party funds from the state will be granted to those with a maximum of 10,000 members.

MTD had on Tuesday submitted their registration at the Elections Commission after garnering 3,333 members.

While the party was given the green light for formation, the first ever individual to sign onto the party was former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Ghafoor.

The party’s founder, Ismail Asif had revealed that the party will be fielding a candidate for the upcoming Parliamentary Election slated for April 2019.

Prominent Lawyer Abdulla Haseen was given the approval to form MLSDP back in August.

Haseen had stated that the motive behind creating a new political party is to ensure laborers' rights and to work towards maintaining social justice.

Prior to the registration of the two new parties, Maldives had six registered parties which are, main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), opposition Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM), Jumhooree Party (JP), Adhaalath Party (AP), Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) and Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP).
