The Auditor General’s office has submitted former President Abdulla Yameen's financial statement to the Maldives Police Service (MPS).
The report, which the former President had failed to submit annually during his term, had been submitted to the Auditor General’s office on the last day of his administration and the office had submitted the report to the police on the 13th of December.
Article 120 of the Maldives constitution states that the President shall submit a statement of all property and monies owned by him as well as business interests and all assets and liabilities to the Auditor General every year. The constitution also requires the same thing to be done from ministers.
However, none of the ministers during former President Yameen’s administration had submitted annual financial reports, with the President himself having submitted a report on the very last day in office.
This comes at a time relevant investigative bodies are investigating corruption allegations into the former President for allegedly being involved in illicit financial transactions during his five-year term as president.
Police confirmed that they investigating the allegations against Yameen, and he was questioned over the matter on Saturday.
Bank accounts linked to him have been frozen since, with authorities seizing over MVR 100 million.
