The President on Wednesday appointed Acting Commissioner of Police (ACP) Mohamed Hameed to the post of Deputy Commissioner of Police.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih also assigned him as the interim in-charge of the police service.

Hameed, who was appointed to the post of assistant commissioner on the 04th of December, was promoted by the power bestowed upon President Solih under Article 54 (b) of the Police Act.

Hameed previously served as a Chief Superintendent of Police Intelligence and was given the post of ACP after a Supreme Court order reinstated him to the police service.

Hameed was dismissed as superintendent in 2012 after being accused of leaking confidential information. The allegedly leaked information was on the plan to overthrow former President Mohamed Nasheed’s administration. However, no charges were pressed against him. Right after his removal, the Civil Court had issued an order to reinstate him but the order was nullified by the High Court.

Journalists at the Supreme Court hearing reported that Hawwa Sana, an attorney at the Prosecutor General’s office, had testified that Hameed's dismissal was unlawful.
