Maldives remains determined to work with South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) members for the noble aspirations that the founders of SAARC envisioned for South Asia in overcoming challenges its people face, says President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
President Solih stated this in a letter addressed to Secretary General of SAARC, Amjad Hussain B. Sial on the occasion of SAARC Charter Day 2018, celebrated on Saturday.
While Saturday marked the 34th anniversary of the founding of the SAARC Charter, President Solih extended warm greetings from his government and people to SG Amjad and staff at the SAARC Secretariat as well as the people of all SAARC Member States.
Highlighting that SAARC has played a key role in promoting cooperation and collaboration among its member states in various areas encompassing economic, social, cultural and technical fields since its establishment in 1985, President Solih wrote that SAARC has proven itself to be an “important vehicle” in helping to foster greater understanding and friendship among the South Asian region.
Assuring his government’s full commitment to play its part in strengthening regional cooperation towards improved economic status and a peaceful region, President Solih expressed his hope that differences will be put aside to work together as an organization to “meaningfully contribute” towards improving the living quality and welfare of citizens.
The President stated that while united in its hopes for a peaceful and prosperous region, South Asia is enriched by cultural diversity, and that he wishes SAARC and the South Asia region a “peaceful and prosperous future”.
