The National Disaster Management Center (NDMC) has revealed that the damages incurred by the downpour of Wednesday that caused major flooding in the capital city Male’ reached MVR 1.2 million.
Project Director at the center, Hisaan Hassan stated that the center has completed assessments in 173 out of the 214 affected households on Saturday and they were affected due to the hours-long downpour that caused major flooding in most parts of the capital city.
Highlighting that the assessment of the remaining 41 households have delayed due to different reasons, Hisaan stated that they will begin their assessments on Monday.
While six houses were heavily affected due to the flooding, one of the houses, Lonudhooge, was most affected. NDMC had on Wednesday provided temporary shelter to 20 people following the flood. The two families had been taken into their care and accommodated at a guest house. One of the two families has since returned home.
State utilities company, STELCO and Maldives Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) have since provided furnishings and other household items as free aid. NDMC is to publicize a list of those in need on Monday.
Male’ remained flooded throughout the entirety of Wednesday and later that night, following the hours-long rain showers that caused 149 millimeters of floods, some up to knee level.
