Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has met with Colonel Mohamed Nazim, Maldives’ former defence minister who was sentenced to prison on weapons possession charges.
Maumoon revealed this in a post on his Twitter account on Thursday, where a photo shows the former president with Nazim and wife Afaaf Mohamed, as well as former first lady Nasreena Ibrahim.
My wife joins me in thanking you Hon Col (retired) @nazim7878 and mdm @afaaf7878 for a wonderful evening and a sumptuous dinner. So nice to meet you both after such a long time. pic.twitter.com/7ArFRXO5lC

Both Nazim and Maumoon are on medical leave from their sentences, and are currently in Malaysia. The Criminal Court on November 4th also issued a stay order on their sentences given an ongoing review of the proceedings that led to their convictions.
Nazim was sentenced to 11 years in prison, on March 27th, 2015. Nazim’s lawyers maintain that he was framed. A statement attesting to this has also been released by the office of former vice president Ahmed Adeeb, himself serving a decades-long sentence.
