The Elections Commission of the Maldives has revealed that preparations are underway to hold the Maldives Parliamentary Election in March 2019, as it’s 18th tenure is coming to an end.
Commission member and spokesperson Ahmed Akram told RaajjeMV that preparations are underway to hold the election is late March 2019, and that discussions are currently being held with political parties on the procedure of the election.
As such, two seats are to be added to capital city Male’s constituency, which adds two extra seats to the Parliament.
The commission’s board of members had met with all of the members of Parliament that represent Male’ constituencies in Parliament currently., to discuss on the addition of two more seats to the capital city.
Spokesperson Akram stated that political parties have been informed of the matter so that their opinions may be discussed about it as well, before the 21st of October.
The current tenure in Parliament consists of 85 seats, for 85 constituencies with the inclusion of 12 seats representing the capital.
The current members had taken their oath on the 28th of May 2014 and their five-year tenure ends in 2019.
