Held discussions on strengthening bilateral ties between both countries

Primes Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan has congratulated President-elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih following his triumph over outgoing President Abdulla Yameen in the Presidential polls held on the 23rd of September, via a telephone call.

This was announced by Solih’s spokesperson and Member of Parliament for north-Mahchangoalhi constituency Mariya Ahmed Didi at the joint opposition coalition’s serial press conference, on Monday.

While Mariya confirmed that PM Imran congratulated Solih via phone call, she further revealed that PM Imran expressed his hope that the government transition will proceed smoothly and peacefully. Further, PM Imran reflected on the history of close and cordial relations between the Maldives and Pakistan, expressing his hope that the existing ties of friendship and cooperation will be expanded in Solih’s tenure.

Imran khan, who was sworn in as the 22nd PM of Pakistan on the 18th of August this year, is one of the political leaders with whom Solih wishes to meet with the most.

In addition, Saudi Arabia’s King Salman bin Abdulaziz al Saud had also congratulated the new President-elect via phone call on Sunday. The king expressed ‘sincere wishes for success and prosperity of the Maldivian people’ and said he looks forward to ‘developing and strengthening’ the relations between both countries.

Moreover, India Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also called Solih to congratulate him, a day after temporary results were announced at polling stations. During the call, PM Modi invited Solih to India, which the new President-elect had accepted, having agreed to travel there within the coming days.

Modi had vowed to give the assistance acquired for the progress of the nation.

Solih had also invited the Indian PM to his swearing-in ceremony.
