Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has been released on bail on Sunday evening.

While his son Dhiggaru constituency MP Ahmed Faris Maumoon and Jumhooree Party leader Qasim Ibrahim were also released on bail minutes earlier, Gayoom’s release order was approved by High Court Judge Shujau Usman as well.

He was released after paying a bond of MVR 60,000.

The former president, arrested on February 5 immediately after the declaration of a state of emergency, was found guilty of obstruction of justice in July. He was sentenced to one year and seven months.

While the 80-year-old has been diagnosed with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), his doctors had advised him to not be alone due to the risk of him falling unconscious. RaajjeMV understands that the correctional service’s medical board had cleared him for house arrest transfer some time ago.
