North-Henveiru constituency MP Abdulla Shahid has been appointed as the chairman of the transition period, following the announcement of the final results of the 2018 presidential election.
The announcement was made by President-elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s spokesperson, Mariya Ahmed Didi, at a press conference on Saturday.
While Mariya noted that the work has already begun, a Director General of Transition will likely be appointed on Sunday.
According to the Presidential Transition Act, a Director General of Transition is approved by Civil Service Commission.
Earlier on Saturday, the Elections Commission announced the final results of Sunday’s polls. Joint Opposition’s Ibrahim Mohamed Solih won 58.4 percent of the votes against his opponent, incumbent President Abdulla Yameen
Since then, there have been reports that important state documents are being destroyed so as to hide the current government’s alleged illegal activities.
During Saturday’s press conference Mariya reiterated the call to refrain from such acts, adding that doing so ‘is a crime’.
