Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM)’s congress has approved the decision to become an opposition party on November 17.

The resolution submitted at the national PPM congress by the party’s vice president Azima Shakoor on Friday night was passed unanimously.

The resolution states that PPM will officially become an opposition party after the beginning of the new presidential term and that the party leader, President Abdulla Yameen, will become an opposition leader who advocates for the rights of citizens.

At the congress, Azima said that PPM will work to make the government accountable and will not allow anyone or anything to harm the country.

She asked president-elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and vice-president-elect Faisal Naseem to work for the country and its people.

In her speech, she also said that their success is due to the unwavering commitment of the party members and that PPM’s administration has seen the development of roads, better protection for children and the elderly, and the empowerment of women and young people.

She added that over 96,000 citizens have approved of PPM’s work and that their membership will only grow in the future.
