Authorities have declared the 18th of September as a holiday following Maldives becoming the champions of the 2018 SAFF Championship, after beating India 2-1.

President’s office revealed that President Abdulla Yameen has declared 18th of September as a holiday in order to welcome the Maldives national team back home, with the Suzuki cup.

Maldives and India went head to head in the finals on Saturday at Dhaka Stadium in Bangladesh.

This is Maldives' second win in the most prestigious football competition in the South Asia region since beating India in the finals 1 – 0 in the 2008 SAFF Championship.

Saturday's win took social media by storm, with supporters sending the team felicitations for “bringing the title home”. It is also notable that Presidential candidates President Abdulla Yameen and Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has sent congratulations to the team.
