The Supreme Court of the Maldives has thrown out a case filed by former Attorney General Husnu Al Suood appealing on the court to declare the day of the ballots for the Presidential Election slated for the 23rd of September to be made a holiday.

While the day of the ballots fall on a Sunday, RaajjeMV understands that the ex-AG had filed the appeal since the elections in previous years were held on public holidays albeit this year’s election being held on a week day. Suood had made the appeal in order to make it more convenient for eligible voters.

However, the Supreme Court had thrown out the case as it doesn’t believe it fits under the constitutional conventions under court regulations.

The President’s Office is yet to declare the 23rd of September as a holiday. However, the Elections Commission had announced when they announced the election date, that they will try to make the day a public holiday.

Following no action on the matter thus far, the opposition coalition had even expressed their concerns to the commission.

According to opposition’s accusations, the government has decided to hold the ballots on a week day to lessen the likelihood for more eligible voters to cast their votes.
