President Abdulla Yameen has on Tuesday appointed Mohamed 'Reynis' Saleem as member of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).

A seat at the Commission has been vacant since the appointment of Mohamed Faisal to the High Court earlier this month.

Saleem was a member of JSC during former President Mohamed Waheed's administration as well, but was removed later.

As per the Maldives Constitution, the Judicial Service Commission comprises of 10 members.

It is entrusted with the responsibility and power to,

  1. appoint, promote and transfer Judges other than the Chief Justice and Judges of the Supreme Court, and to make recommendations to the President on the appointment of the Chief Justice and Judges of the Supreme Court
  2. investigate complaints about the Judiciary, and to take disciplinary action against them, including recommendations for dismissal;
  3. make rules: 1. regarding schemes for recruitment and procedures for the appointment of Judges; 2. ethical standards of Judges; 3. providing for such matters as are necessary or expedient for the exercise, performance and discharge of the duties and responsibilities of the Commission;
  4. advise the President and the People’s Majlis on any other matter relating to the Judiciary or the administration of justice
  5. exercise such additional powers and functions prescribed by this Constitution or by law.
