An individual, who was injured in the commotion created by police officers at a café in Ihavandhoo island of Haa Alifu atoll on Tuesday, has been transferred to Dhidhdhoo island for further treatment.

Specialist Operations (SO) officers who arrived in Ihavandhoo island ahead of President Abdulla Yameen’s visit there were reportedly involved in a dispute with the island’s residents.

The individual transferred to Dhihdhoo for further treatment is a waiter at the café.

Ihavandhoo island council president Mohamed Rasheed told RaajjeMV that four individuals were injured in the turmoil created by the officers, including two members of the council.

He said that the commotion started when the officers barged into a café located in a two-storey building near the island’s harbor, without a court order.

Council’s vice president Ali Rameez said that the officers were not happy with those in the café taking photos of the president’s arrival and had ordered them to vacate the place, which was not received well.

Ihavandhoo constituency MP Mohamed “Muhamma” Abdulla is one of the 12 lawmakers that the authorities are trying to unseat and he has not been allowed to take part in a parliament sitting for over a year now. In addition, the Local Government Authority (LGA) has suspended the island’s councilors on multiple occasions.

According some youth members, such acts have led to resentment towards the government.
