Amendment proposed to raise registration fee for lawmakers

An amendment has been submitted to Parliament seeking to extend the registration fee of lawmaker under the Parliamentary Elections Act.
Faresmaathodhaa constituency MP Hussain Mohamed Latheef proposed the amendment at a parliament sitting held on Wednesday night. The amendment states that members must pay a registration fee of MVR 15,000 to bid for their seats.
The current fee for registration is MVR 5,000.
While an amendment has been proposed to increase the fee for lawmakers, a separate amendment was proposed to the Presidential Elections Act, to increase the deposit fee presidential candidates
Under the amendment, those who submit their bids for candidacy for a presidential election must pay a registration fee of MVR 100,000. The current fee is MVR 40,000.
