A hearing in the terror trial of former first daughter Yumna Maumoon’s husband, Mohamed Nadheem who was arrested following allegations of conspiring to overthrow the government, has been scheduled for 01:00 p.m. on Sunday.
In the previous hearing held in the case, Criminal Court had given both sides to apply necessary documents prior to the trial. As such, said documents will be presented to court at Sunday’s hearing. At the hearing defense lawyer Moosa Siraj had also requested the court to release Nadheem to house arrest if charges raised against him cannot be excused altogether as he does not hold a criminal record to which the court had responded that Nadheem cannot be released.
In the preliminary hearing held on the 15th of May, Presiding Judge Ahmed Hailam had not found any reason to alter the jail sentence of Nadheem who is accused of having been involved in a coup to overthrow the government since the release of the Supreme Court ruling on the 01st of February.
Furthermore, Nadheem was given a time period of three days to present witnesses in his defense.
A total of nine individuals were charged under aforementioned accusations and are to be kept in confinement for the remainder of their trials.
Nadheem was slapped with terror charges following accusations of conspiring to overthrow the government with parliamentarians and former Commissioner of Police Ahmed Areef by following the instructions of his brother-in-law and Member of Parliament for Dhiggaru constituency Ahmed Faris Maumoon. He is also accused of manipulating officers of the police service and pitting them against one another. Other allegations under which Nadheem remains behind bars include for undesirably influencing the government and creating public unrest.
The former first daughter’s husband has been incarcerated since his arrest along with father-in-law and former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom on the 05th of February, mere hours after a nation-wide State of Emergency was declared.
His wife Yumna has since been summoned to the police headquarters numerous times for questioning under same allegations.
