Former chairman of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Ali Waheed has registered to run for Jumhooree Party (JP)'s presidency.

Waheed made the announcement via twitter on Tuesday.

Noting that he is running for JP's presidency, Waheed asked the people for their support and will-wishes. He added that he will, during his leadership, ensure that all are treated equally.

While JP is to hold its national congress in Paradise Island Resort this weekend, the party will be appointing a president during the meeting- as well as individuals to several other positions.

Waheed, who previously served as Thoddoo constituency MP, resigned from his post at MDP in November 2016. He joined Jumhooree Party this year, in May, and is currently the political advisor to party leader Qasim Ibrahim.

Ali Waheed has been living in self-exile in London, United Kingdom since 2015. He left the country after authorities commenced an investigation against him over the opposition's May Day protest that year.

He started out his political career through Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) and joined MDP in 2011.
