Main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has said that over 1,500 members will attend its upcoming national congress, including foreign dignitaries.

MDP is to hold its national congress on June 29-30 in Ukulhas island of Alif Alif atoll.

Speaking at a press conference on Monday, the party's chair Hassan Latheef said that while over 1,000 members will attend the meeting, that they 'will be selling additional 200 tickets'.

Latheef said that the reason for selling the tickets is to give party's well-wishers the opportunity to help with the funds, as well as to give them the chance to join the meeting.

He further noted that they will be sending invitations to the various foreign representatives to the Maldives, both resident and non-resident representatives.

He noted that their fare and accommodation has been arranged by the party, adding that some will be staying at neighboring islands.

Latheef added that all teams will be departing to Ukulhas together from capital Malé City on Friday morning. The congress is to begin at 4pm.

Also speaking at Monday's press conference, MDP's Secretary General Anas Abdil Sattar emphasized that they will be brining changes to the party's regulations during the congress.

He further highlighted that the decision to hold the congress in Ukulhas was made after failing to secure a venue in the capital, despite having sent in official requests to relevant authorities including the Election Commission's advisory committee.
