Officials from Human Rights Commission (HRCM) of the Maldives have met with jailed former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb.

The commission had sent officials to meet with the jailed former Vice President after a complaint lodged at the commission by his wife Mariyam Nashwa.

HRCM officials had gone to Dhoonidhoo where Adeeb is being incarcerated and met with him on Sunday. Adeeb’s family had been informed of the visit by the commission.

Nashwa had filed a complaint at the commission following Adeeb’s sudden transfer from Maafushi prison to Dhoonidhoo island prison where he is being kept in solitary confinement.

Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) had handed Adeeb over to the MPS and transferred him to Dhoonidhoo after Maafushi prison had fallen into an emergency situation under the prisons and parole act. However, the MCS had not stated how the emergency situation had arose, neither why Adeeb was the only one being transferred to the detention facility in Dhoonidhoo island.

Adeeb’s family has since expressed immense concerns since he is being kept in solitary confinement and is not permitted lawyer visits.

While it is stated in the prisons and parole act that jailbirds are to be kept in general confinement, Adeeb is being kept in a custodial, solitary confinement unlawfully.

A letter addressed to the commission by the former VP’s family also states that Adeeb’s sudden transfer to Dhoonidhoo island prison is an act of torture under the Anti-torture act of the Maldives.
