Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has decided to hold its upcoming national congress in Ukulhas island of Alifu Alifu atoll.

The party's national congress meeting is to be held on 29-30 June.

At a congress committee meeting held on Friday night, members decided to hold the congress meeting in Ukulhas as the party was unable to secure a venue in the capital Malé City.

Speaking after the meeting, MDP's chair Hassan Latheef accused incumbent President Abdulla Yameen's government of not giving them the space to hold the congress meeting in Malé, despite requests.

Latheef noted that holding the congress in Ukulhas will increase the party's morale.

He further appealed to MDP members to assist in holding the meeting in Ukulhas, highlighting that holding the congress in an island will be 'a challenge' as the Elections Commission (EC) is yet to issue political party funds.

MDP decided to hold a national congress meeting in June at its 163rd council meeting, with the unanimous votes of the 31 members present.
