On Friday, the United Nations (UN) will be holding a plenary meeting to elect five non-permanent members of the Security Council.
Maldives and Indonesia are running a fierce campaign to win the seat reserved for the representative of the Asia Pacific at the Security Council.
Members require the vote of two-thirds of the UN member states in order to win the seat.
While the General Assembly comprises of five permanent members, the additional non-permanent 10 members are those that alter every two years.
If Maldives wins, the country will represent the Asia Pacific region in the asembly from 2019 - 2020. The states that win the seats will acquire the assembly seat from January 2019 onwards.
Senior officials of the Maldives Ministry of Foreign Affairs are currently in New York, where the UN Headquarters is established.
The 73rd Session of the UN General Assembly is set to begin in September.
