The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) of the Maldives has decided that there is no corruption in the distribution of flats under the “Gedhoruveri Kuruvun” program.
According to the commission, they had closed off the case following inadequate evidence, under article 25 (a) (1) of the Anti-Corruption Commission act which states that the commission will close the case where it is found that there is no offence of corruption involved in it.
The commission had highlighted four points under the decision to close the case. One being that points were reduced for some applicants given that years had passed since their forms were submitted, following which their living circumstances will have changed.
Furthermore, ACC had highlighted that the surveillance of some residences of the applicants and their living situations had not been completely assessed given various reasons. However, their investigation shows that second opportunities had been given to those on whom the assessment had not been completed.
ACC’s conclusion also highlights that flats had been allocated rightfully after thorough assessment of those who had filed complaints at the Ministry of Housing and Infrastructure.
Flat recipients must have over 110 points to be granted flat under category one of the housing scheme, and those who get over 112 points will be granted flats under category two. ACC has in its conclusion emphasized that said procedure was followed in flat distribution.
While ACC has come to this conclusion, the Housing Ministry is yet to publicize a list of flat recipients. It has however been brought under the spotlight that while some of the applicants had received 55 points, some of which are unmarried and do not have children.
Flats distributed under the current administration’s “Gedhoruveri Kuruvun” scheme were the ones constructed under “Veshifahi Male’” established in former President Mohamed Nasheed’s administration.
