A remembrance ceremony was held on Friday night for the late Dr. Abdul Majeed, the former Islamic Minister.

The ceremony was held at the Islamic Centre at 10pm.

Those in attendance included prominent religious scholars, cabinet members, senior company officials, as well as Dr. Majeed’s family, former students, and members of the public.

Those who spoke at the ceremony included Adhaalath Party’s Vice President Ali Zahir, former Minister Mohamed Aslam, as well as parliament members Anara Naeem, Abdulla Shahid, Moosa Nizar, and Mohamed Waheed.

Everyone had noted the immense contribution Dr. Majeed made to spreading the Islamic faith during his time as head of the Center for the Holy Quran and later as Islamic Minister during former President Mohamed Nasheed’s administration. They also noted the Dr. Majeed worked tirelessly to establish a fair political system.

Speaking at the ceremony, former Minister Aslam said that he played an important role in setting government policies and that important ministerial decisions were always made after discussing them with him.

Also at the ceremony, Dr. Majeed’s son Ahmed Firaas said that Dr. Majeed was a great educator who made contributions to Islamic philosophy. Firaas ended the ceremony after leading a prayer for his father.

Dr. Majeed died unexpectedly in Sri Lanka on May 22. He was found unconscious on the floor of his room days earlier and doctors had said that he had suffered complications due to a stroke. He passed passing away at the age of 55.
