Popular preacher suspended over 'ongoing investigation'

Ministry of Islamic Affairs has decided to suspend religious scholar Sheikh Ali Zaid, from giving out any sermons.

The ministry’s media coordinator, Mohamed Ahsan confirmed the matter to RaajjeMV.

According to Ahsan, the suspension was imposed on Zaid due to an ongoing investigation against him, but did not disclose any further details.

While Sheikh Zaid is to have delivered a sermon at a mosque in the capital Malé City after the ministry’s decision to ban him from delivering religious sermons, he was unaware of his suspension until Sunday.

RaajjeMV understands that the failure to inform him of the suspension has caused problems at the ministry, with some of the employees being questioned over the matter.

When contacted by RaajjeMV to inquire on the matter, Zaid said that he did not wish to make a comment.
