Hearing in Gayoom's terror trial scheduled for Monday

A preliminary hearing has been scheduled in the terrorism trial of detained former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.

The preliminary hearing has been scheduled for 12:00 p.m on Monday.

Gayoom, who is being charges with terrorism for allegedly attempting to overthrow the current government, was unable to attend two prior hearings in his trial due to his deteriorating health condition.

While the hearing scheduled for 10:00 a.m this morning was cancelled as well, the hearing in charges raised against Gayoom was priorly cancelled on Wednesday as well.

Along with the terrorism allegations, Gayoom is also charged with bribery and obstruction of justice for refusing to hand over his mobile phone after being taken into police custody following the declaration of the State of Emergency after incumbent President Abdulla Yameen refused to implement the Supreme Court ruling issued on the 01st of February.

Gayoom, who was diagnosed with Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo is not seeing any improvements since his health deteriorated while he was in incarceration following which his family and supporters have continually appealed on the authorities to approve his transfer to house arrest if the Maldives Correctional Service cannot take adequate care of him.

Gayoom's ailment is one which requires someone to be present with him at all times.
