The first Vice President of incumbent President Yameen's tenure, Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed has congratulated reformer and ex-Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia Anwar Ibrahim for his release from prison.

In the tweet Dr. Jameel posted on Wednesday, he wrote that the ex-Deputy PM is a leader from whom Malaysia and the Muslim world draws inspiration.

Jameel wrote that Anwar is a leader who continues to defend and stand by democratic principles and human rights no matter what the consequences are.

Alonside Jameel, former President Mohamed Nasheed who is now in self-exile, had also tweeted his congratulations to the ex-deputy PM.

In his tweet, Nasheed highlighted that "when you never, ever give up, good things finally happen".

Nasheed conveyed his congratulations to Anwar, his wife, Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and daughter Nurul Izzah following his release.

"With the support of Malaysian people, you did it!" reads Nasheed's tweet.

Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, the Malaysian politician and leader of opposition Pakatan Harapan coalition, was jailed three years ago in 2015, and walks free from incarceration after receiving a royal pardon from the Malaysian King on Wednesday.

Anwar was jailed following a prison sentece perceived by many as politically motivated and a plot by then Prime Minister Najib Razak in an attempt to get rid of him, who had risen up to run against Najib.

Najib Razak who led Malaysia's ruling party was ousted for the first time in a span of 60 years after Mahathir Mohamed won a historic victory in the Malaysian General Elections earlier in May.

The Maldives opposition leaders had widely supported and congratulated the Malaysian oppositon's win, with Nasheed, Jameel and several others taking to twitter to congratulate Mahathir.
