President Abdulla Yameen has on Monday appointed Ahmed Shifau as president of the Employment Tribunal.

He was appointed as a member of the Employment Tribunal a day before, on Sunday.

A ceremony was held at the President’s Office on Sunday morning, where High Court Judge Shujau Usman administered his oath.

Afterwards, President Yameen presented him with the letter of appointment, which the Office said that were “in accordance with the Employment Act”.

The Employment Tribunal was established in December 2008 pursuant to the Employment Act 2008. It stated that the Employment Tribunal is composed of seven members, appointed to the post by the president. Amongst the seven, two are designated by the President of the Maldives as the President and Vice President of the Tribunal.

However, with the appointment of the new president, the Employment Tribunal currently has five members. They are; Mariyam Sham’aa Ibrahim, Mariyam Muna, Mariyam Rishfa and Vice President Aishath Fizleen.
