Former President Mohamed Nasheed has called on authorities to release Ibrahim Labaan Shareef, a prominent footballer and Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) activist.
Nasheed made this appeal through a post on his Twitter account on Tuesday, claiming that Labaan is being kept in incarceration unjustly.
22-year-old Labaan, who was a goalkeeper for a local club when he was arrested, is being charged with assaulting an officer of the police.
Nasheed had also called on authority to free 21-year-old photographer Umar Gahir as well, who was arrested at the ‘May Day’ protests in 2015 as well.
