Elections Commission (EC) has started compiling the voters registry list for the Presidential Election 2018.
Earlier on Sunday, EC held a meeting with the Department of National Registration (DNR) and National Center for Information Technology (NCIT) to discuss the matter.
While EC started the task after declaring that the current situation of the country is calm and steady to give way to a peaceful election this year, the opposition refuses to participate in an election conducted by the current commission.
Opposition politicians accuse the President of Elections Commission, Ahmed Shareef of being biased towards the current government, noting that he had played a major role in incumbent President Abdulla Yameen's Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), until his appointment to the Commission.
The opposition added that the rest of the members of the commission are also responsible for the 12 seats lost by opposition parliament members and many other human rights violations as well. Therefore the opposition refuses to partake in an election held by a corrupt commission and urges to bring reforms to the commission before a free and fair election can be held.
Elections Commission aims to release the voters list within the next month.
